What is a rare disease?

In the United States, a disease is considered rare if it is believed to affect fewer than 200,000 Americans.  Some other countries and the European Union have similar but slightly different definitions. 

How many people have rare diseases?

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), there are almost 7,000 rare diseases affecting nearly 30 million Americans.

A rare disease affects fewer than 200,000 Americans and typically lacks financial incentive to make and market new treatment.  The prevalence of a rare disease is usually an estimate and may change over time.  A rare (or orphan) disease is generally considered to have a prevalence of fewer than 200,000 affected individuals in the United States. Certain diseases with 200,000 or more affected individuals may be included if certain subpopulations of people who have the disease are equal to the prevalence standard for rare diseases.
