For JoAnn Shimko and her son, raising money for the Penn State Chapter of Uplifting Athletes with a golf tournament was the perfect way to honor her late husband, Mike.  Mike was diagnosed with kidney cancer at 50; he passed away shortly after his 53rd birthday.

"He was a Penn State grad and died in May, 2006, from kidney cancer,"  JoAnn says.

Three months after Mike's death in 2006, the inaugural Mike Shimko Memorial was held at Pine Hills Country Club in Taylor, PA.  Money raised benefits the Penn State Chapter of Uplifting Athletes; the chapter has raised more than $600,000 for kidney cancer since its inception in 2003.

"If we can help just one person, it's worth it,"  JoAnn says.  "We know what families are going through.  We know the feeling of emptiness."

JoAnn knows her family's efforts, along with everyone who is involved, is making a difference.  Last year alone the golf tournament raised more than 7-thousand dollars.  Joanne is hoping this year's event, the 7th Annual Mike Shimko Memorial, raises even more.  And this is where everyone can help: one can golf in the tournament or sponsor a hole, opportunities for all.
