Weekly Update from Colgate

This past week Colgate football played the Fordham Rams in an over cast and rain soaked Andy Kerr Stadium. Braving the elements, running back Nate Eachus rushed for over 200 yards on our way to over 500 yards of total offense and a 38-14 victory. Quarterback Gavin McCarney continued his stellar play as he led the offense to scores on all but our first two possessions and a perfect six scores on six possessions in the red zone. I attribute the improved play, in pressure situations, to our new practice format. Each afternoon, as practice carries on, Coach Biddle will randomly blow his whistle to bring the team up and states a game scenario. The offense and defense then have one play to accomplish their goal. This occurs five times a practice and we are better prepared to handle adversity and unexpected transitions, in the game, from it. This Saturday, Colgate football travels to New Jersey to take on the Monmouth Hawks. Monmouth is an aggressive team who gets around the ball and forces turnovers. With a plus six turnover margin, Monmouth has found a way to keep games close and win in the fourth quarter. We are very excited to play Monmouth in a rematch of last year's season opener. Colgate stopped a Monmouth two point conversion with only seconds remaining to seal a 30-29 win. I feel the team has begun to and have nearly righted the ship after our early season woes. As we build off last week's performance, great things are to come Monmouth and beyond into Patriot League play. I look forward to writing you next week after this Saturday's road win over Monmouth. Kevin Kevin Morgan is a senior at Colgate University majoring in Political Science and plays center for the Colgate Raiders football team. He is currently the New Leadership Advisor for the Colgate chapter of Uplifting Athletes and is also a a two-term past president. He is also Delta Upsilon's Philanthropy Chair and is a member of the Student Athletes Advisory Committee (SAAC).
