Since each rare disease affects fewer than 200,000 Americans, they typically lack financial incentive to make and market new treatments. Increasing public interest in rare diseases and directly funding scientific research are two of the best ways we can improve this situation. Through our network of university chapters run by current college football players, Uplifting Athletes partners with leading charities for specific rare diseases and provide grants for the most promising research.
Our model works. The Penn State Chapter of Uplifting Athletes has raised over $500,000 and countless media impressions to benefit the Kidney Cancer Association since 2003. Three new treatments have been brought to market during that time. This is a significant improvement compared to only one FDA approved treatment in the previous 12 years.
