Sunanjay Bajaj is a neurology resident at UTHealth Houston and an aspiring physician-scientist whose work bridges developmental neuroscience with translational applications for rare disease. Born and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal, he was first introduced to the scientific foundations of neurodevelopmental disorders at the University of Heidelberg, his alma mater. He went on to complete a research doctorate at the Vienna Biocenter, where his work on interneuron migration in brain organoids solidified his passion for neuroscience and guided him toward clinical neurology.
He moved to the United States in 2023 to pursue residency training with the goal of building a translational research career focused on rare neurodevelopmental disorders. In Houston, he joined the laboratory of neurogeneticist Dr. Dennis Lal, collaborating with patients, families, and rare disease foundations to develop quantitative and clinically meaningful approaches to phenotype characterization. His work is strongly community-engaged, including close partnership with the CSNK2A1 Foundation, his collaborators for the Uplifting Athletes Young Investigator Draft project.
In addition to his research, he is deeply committed to medical education. As chair-elect of the American Academy of Neurology’s Consortium of Residents and Fellows, he is helping develop programs that enhance trainee education and broaden access to mentorship and research opportunities nationwide.
The Uplifting Athletes Young Investigator Draft Grant represents an important step in his research trajectory. His long-term goal is to lead a translational research program that unites clinical neurology, genetics, and data science to advance individualized therapies for rare neurodevelopmental disorders.
